Description

Don Melchor has been hailed the best Cabernet Sauvignon from Chile by both the Wine Spectator and Robert Parker. Named after the founder of the winery, Don Melchor de Concha y Toro, the wine has become a symbol of the best the land and the winemaker’s hand can produce in Chile. The 2010 season was marked by temperatures that were lower than normal and cold nights during the ripening period. This allowed us to harvest—a little later than usual—fresh fruit with tremendous Cabernet Sauvignon expression and produce a wine that maintains the Don Melchor personality with great freshness, balance, and elegance in the tannins. In 2010, Chile’s Puente Alto appellation saw a slightly cooler-than-usual growing season, and winemaker Enrique Tirado used the weather to his advantage, allowing the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, grown on alluvial soils, to hang on the vines longer than usual. The result is this particularly elegant version of the flagship Don Melchor. Blended with 3 percent Cabernet Franc, the wine aged in French oak barrels for 15 months. Concha y Toro, owned by the Guilisasti family, is Chile’s largest wine company. Wine No. 9 | Top 100 of 2014 | Wine Spectator
